O que fazemos

We work to identify and empower a new generation of social impact businesses.

We are pioneers in the support and promotion of social impact businesses in Brazil. Since 2004, we have been working on the development of this field to support an increasing number of businesses, so that they can reach market scale and impact the lives of millions of Brazilians.
Our goal is to support the creation of business cases that are both economically and socially successful, that can inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs, and that can influence large public and private organizations in their work with society.

For this goal, our programs are structured to support the entrepreneurs and their businesses at different stages, according to the main challenges and objectives of each phase:

  • PROTOTYPE

A business with a product or service under development, and that is still in the testing phase. This is the phase in which the entrepreneur seeks to understand its value proposition, and what potential there is in solving the problem proposed by that particular product or service.

  • PRODUCT VALIDATION

As the product or service has already been developed, it is time to study its feasibility. This is the phase in which the entrepreneur tests the product with the target audience in order to validate the solution and structure its business operation.

  • MARKET VALIDATION

First sales of the already tested product or service that is showing traction. This is the phase in which the business model is refined to validate if it is financially viable and if it can generate the social impact intended.

  • GROWTH

The business has a consolidated business model and is looking to scale. This is the stage at which we must overcome the operational and market barriers in order to impact as many people as possible and prepare for growth.

Nossa História

ARTEMISIA IS FOUNDED

2004

Artemisia was born from the dream of a 23-year-old American woman, who believed it was possible to integrate business and social impact. Kelly Michel wanted to support the creation of businesses that would help provide more access to health, education, housing, financial services and overall quality of life for low-income families. The first year was full of activities aligned with the focus of our creation. We organized our first seminar for 25 young entrepreneurs whose initiativesaimed to generate income and impact. TRAINING YOUNG PEOPLE

2005

In the same year that Artemisia was incorporated as a legal entity, we launched an internship program in Latin America in partnership with AIESEC – (an international student-led organization that encourages young people to explore their leadership potential and to create a positive impact).

SUPPORT FOR ENTREPRENEURS

2006

Artemisia has its own headquarters and invests in the creation of its São Paulo Hub – an office that offers physical space and networking opportunities for people who want to explore their entrepreneurial ideas for a radically better world. In August of that year, we selected five entrepreneurs to be mentored for two years in the implementation of their businesses: David Hertz – Gastromotiva / Luiz Flávio Alves de Lima – Menisquence / Mark Van Loo – Bombelêla Dance Company / Monalisa Stefani (in memoriam) Solidarity Boutique / Paulo César Dias – ICJ (Encouragers of Young Consciousness).

ARTEMISIA EXPEDITION

2007

From the pilot project to the first formal program: we launched the Artemisia Expedition – Young Entrepreneurs Program, focusing on the development of young social entrepreneurs to build business plans based on real challenges. We also started Entrepreneurs Without Borders, an initiative in which 10 entrepreneurs and 10 interns work together to develop their businesses. By the end of that same year, we had launched our global partnership with Ashoka.

EXPANDING FRONTIERS

2008

We selected five new entrepreneurs to be mentored for two years, focusing on supporting the implementation of their business models: Feira Preta, A Banca, Evamaria, Arquitetas da Comunidade, Conviva and Museu Acessíveis. In addition to that, we also supported two other enterprises: Tekoha and Ecosystems Ecological Design. Our partnership with AIESEC took on new proportions, and the subject of social business reached 35 thousand university students from different countries. We also launched the Social Business Initiative, a training program offered to 37 Ashoka entrepreneurs in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru and Colombia.

2009

We began the year with the 2nd edition of the 'Entrepreneurs Without Borders' program, and with the launch of the Global Business Social Competition for the AIESEC member network. The second half of the year came with more news: First edition of the Start-up Lab, in partnership with the HUB and selection of five other entrepreneurs to be mentored by Artemisia: Alessandra França (Banco Pérola), Cristina Reis (Mãe Natureza), Daniel Contrucci (Aoka) , Omar Haddad (Sementes de Paz), and Tiago Dalvi (Solidarium).

ACCELERATOR AND CHOICE MOVEMENT

2011

A great year: in 2011 we launched the Artemisia Accelerator. The program, which is still ongoing, consists of the search, selection and support of entrepreneurs and their businesses with the potential to generate great transformations in Brazil, focusing on sectors such as Education, Health, Financial Services and Housing. In the same year, Choice was born, a movement created to spread the discussion about social impact business in the main Brazilian universities. We launched the Movement with the Choice Conference, which was a milestone for students from all over Brazil to get to know our cause. Years later, the movement became the largest network of young people engaged on the subject in Brazil, with +800 ambassadors and mobilizing over 97,000 people.

1st MBA AND DISCIPLINE IN GREAT COLLEGES

2012

We supported the creation of the Social Impact Business discipline that pioneered the subject and was first presented at theBusiness Administration school atFGV. We also contributed to the emergence of the subject in several other universities, which now have their own courses and study centers dedicated to the subject. In the same year, we became part of the group that created the first MBA in Socio-environmental Business in Brazil. The course was designed by IPÊ (Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas), Artemisia and CEATS (Center for Social Entrepreneurship and Management in the Third Party Sector), and offers an innovative and practical approach on concepts such as socio-environmental sustainability, including inclusive businesses at the base of the pyramid and shared value.

1st ARTEMISIA LAB

2013

Year of creation of the Artemisia Lab, with its first edition held in Recife. The program was designed to support entrepreneurs in the initial phase, from prototyping to product validation, with a practical methodology for rapid advancement in a short period of time. The participants went through intensive days, in which they were challenged to rethink their way of doing things, in order to maximize the generation of social impact and the financial result. This year we established important partnerships: with the Inspirar Institute, which support the promotion of business education; and the international organization Omidyar Network.

1st IMPACT BUSINESS COURSE AND SOCIAL FINANCE FORUM

2014

Within the objective of the spreading of information about social impact businesses to the greatest possible number of people, we systematized theoretical and practical information from our decade of experiences to create the first online course on social impact business in Brazil. All sales revenue is directed to supporting social impact businesses. In addition, Artemisia together with ICE and Vox created the 1st. Brazilian Social Finance and Impact Business Forum, with the objective of disseminating knowledge and provoking a local reflection on the practice in our field. The Forum is biannual and continues to this today. This year, we initiated an important partnership to foster health impact business together with the Sabin Institute.

HEALTH AND EARLY CHILDHOOD

2015

Along with Sabin Institute, we held a major event with the objective of developing the health ecosystem, which one of the first ones to discuss opportunities and challenges for the ecosystem of social impact businesses in the sector. In addition, we launched the 1st Artemisia Lab focused on Early Childhood. When looking at the Brazilian reality, one sees that children from low-income families do not have access to basic services and adequate incentives, which contributes to social inequality. Understanding the importance of this phase of life for human development and society, we invited Maria Cecilia Souto Vidigal Foundation, Danone Early Life Nutrition and the Alana Institute to carry out a program to support entrepreneurs with solutions focused on Early Childhood development for the lower income population.

In the same year, alongside Caixa (Brazil’s largest public bank), we launched the 'Social Impact Business Challenge: Financial Education and Financial Services for All' to empower a new generation of businesses that promote financial inclusion and financial literacy for people at the base of the pyramid.
